Chimney & Fireplaces/"Mineral Wool"

Question
Hi James,
I'm in my home 9 years and have never (and will never) use my fireplace. Open flames and I don't mix. I have fireplace doors, but would like to put a mineral wool plug in to keep drafts out. I can't find it at any H/W store or chain and need only a very small piece: 25"x25"x3"-4". Any idea where or from whom I can get some? Thanks, Barb

Answer
Hello Barb, I understand what you want to do but I suggest you install a top mount damper/cap that opens and closes with a pull chain in the firebox. you could use the fireplace any time (or not and they are 99% air tight and also keep  out rain, snow, animals, leaves, sticks.
this would stop all draft in that chimney. I would have a local Certified Chimney Sweep (www.csia.org, there you can look up by zip code to find one near you) take a first hand look at what you have they should be able to help even with buying the wool.
Hope this helps
James
contact a sweep (listed above) and see if they have a small amount they can sell you?
