Question
I am refinishing a 30 year old wood burning fireplace front with large Travertine tiles.  The fireplace construction is poured concrete around an already built masonry firebox, damper, smoke shelf and flue.

With the original quarry tile front removed I find that some “leveling” is required and there are a couple of closed cracks in the concrete (the concrete does have steel reinforcement, so it’s not going to fall apart).

How do I level the surface and stop the cracks from coming through the tile?  I was thinking Cement Backer Board.  How should the Board be installed?  Mortar?  Adhesive?  Anchors?  Whole surface attachment, or corners, or edges?

Hi John,

You should be able to adhere the cement backer board to the concrete using thinset or mastic.
