Chimney & Fireplaces/Riased hearth removal

Question
Steve,
I am wanting to remove my raised concrete hearth from my wood burning fireplace but am worried about cracking/damaging the fireplace in the process.  My hearth is standard about 12 inches deep x 3 inches thick and about 10 inches off the floor. (probably 30 years old)   My idea is to wack it (lightly) with a small sledge until the concrete breaks up and then cut the rebar off with my metal cutter.   Should I be safe in tackling this project in this manner or do you think I am asking for trouble.  Don't worry I won't hold you accountable.   Just seeking your opinion.
Thanks

Answer
I will speak with one of my friends (does this sort of work for me) and see what he says. I will then get back to you with the answer. can you please email me so i can send you a response back?

Thanks.

So here's the deal. he says that what you have written here is correct. Many small whacks vs a few big ones. Be cautious and take your time, you'll be fine.

Hope this helped.
