Chimney & Fireplaces/flue insert question

Question
An older fireplace needs a 6 inch stainless steel flexible insert. If conversion with a direct vent gas fireplace insert is planned, would that change the choice of flue insert? Would the direct vent flue go inside the 6 inch one, or would the 6 inch be removed first? Would it be better to wait and not use the fireplace until after getting the gas insert? Finally, if the gas furnace vents through the chimney, does that change anything?

It would be better to wait and not use the fireplace until after getting the gas insert.

If a gas furnace vents through the chimney, it will have to have it's own independent lining system.

I recommend you contact a local CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep to do some on-site diagnosis of your problem.
