Question
I am having a new wood burning fireplace installed and found none of my chimney insulated.  I took care of the exterior walls, but I am still concerned about cold air getting through the sheet metal baffle.  There don't seem to be gaps for the chimney liner, it's just the heat loss factor.  Is it safe to insulate above it and if so can I use fiberglass batts?

William,

You will have to differ to the manufactures installation instructions as well as the authority having jurisdiction in your area. One thing to remember is that insulation that touches the chimney system can transfer the heat to combustible material and cause problems later. The manufacture will dictate the chase area and your code authority will have local restrictions most likely. Good luck.
