Question
I was replacing a natural gas stove and I noticed a white residue by the standing pilot what is this residue

Answer
This residue is the same residue that is found on the glass of the fireplace/stove when the unit has been burning for a long time. This white "Stuff" is the bi-product of burning Natural Gas.

It is quite normal to find this near the pilot light assembly in the fireplace/stove and on the glass itself.
