Chimney & Fireplaces/NO CLUE how to begin!

Question
We just bought a house and the chimney/ fireplace were both thoroughly inspected when we moved in 4 months ago. However, we are at a complete loss as to how to open the chimney flue? or damper? We are clueless as to what we need to open in order to light a fire in this wood burning fireplace. We have an Installation instructions manual for  a Majestic Thulman Fireplace L36 B model. There is a bar with a loop on it inside the fireplace and when I opened it some water droplets did fall on my hand, I am assuming it is open. So am I ready to go? I have filled the house with smoke already once before we found that bar, and am not willing to do it again. Please any advice would be great. Thankyou!

Answer
Hello Kelly, ok 1st rear the manual cover to cover, then that "loop" should open and close the damper (look up DO NOT GET ANY THING IN YOUR EYE'S) to see what is open and what is closed or use a mirror. then when you have it open make sure to open a window in that same room (release's negative pressure).
I would have a local Certified Chimney Sweep www.csia.org, there you can look up by zip code to find one near you) take a first hand look at what you have they should be able to help.
Hope this helps
James
