Chimney & Fireplaces/cleaning suggestions

Question
Hi: I have a fireplace in my home that has open spaces behind the face brick that runs up beside the firebox on each side. Whoever built this, mortered in bricks at the opening, top and bottom, that are split length wise leaving lots of air flow when its heated from the firebox. Problem is: there is no way to get inside to clean. When I light the fire there is a terrible smell that comes out of the upper vent along with the great heat. I'm assuming that this is just dust and dirt heating up. We don't use the fireplace that often. s there something that I can do?  Thanks.
