Chimney & Fireplaces/How large is the metal piece around a brick fireplace

Question
I know there is a 2" space between my brick fireplace and the plaster wall that covers the top up to the ceiling. I want to make a whole on the side of the fireplace above my mantel to run a speaker cable to the other side of the fireplace but when I drilled a whole in the wood I ran into metal and did not get into the open space. So my question is how thick is this metal and also how wide? Can I drill through it to get the cable into the space?

Answer
Hello Amy, is your fireplace a pre fab? if so do not drill through the metal, I would have a local Certified Chimney Sweep www.csia.org, there you can look up by zip code to find one near you) take a first hand look at what you have they should be able to help.
Hope this helps
James
