Question
I currently have a 1968 brick fireplace (cynder block in the back, it looks like) that I'd love to convert to a 3-sided gas fireplace. I'm wondering if it would be possible. Would the weight of the brick be too heavy for a gas fireplace insert and all the brick have to be removed or could the insert support the weight? Any idea if this idea is possible or how much it could potentially cost us?

Good question, first things first, the weight of the masonry structure will compromise the structure when the bricks are removed as you seemed to have quest all ready. Second, an insert cannot and should not support any weight other than it's own. Depending on the appliance and construction cost in your area, the removal and replacement cost will be worthy of obtaining. I cant say or even guess at the cost myself without seeing the fireplace and chiming system that exist. The appliance itself will run about $2750 -$3250+-.  Best of luck to you.
