Chimney & Fireplaces/pre fab back panel replacement

Question
We had a chimney company replace the back panel of our pre fab fireplace due to cracks. They installed the panel, but sawed it vertically down the middle "to prevent cracks due to shifting and wood hitting it". Aesthetically it is not great, but would be willing manage it as long as it is helpful. They said it is safe because there is a steel plate behind it. Have you ever heard of this? Is it just easier for them to install?

Answer
Hello Erin, those panels should be in 1 piece not 2?
it was easier to install if you just cut it down the middle, this is not the right way to install them (any crack will effect the "metal plate"  behind it) and this 2 piece panel should be replaced with a non cut piece. you can threaten to call your local building department (as this panel was not installed as per manufacturers installation instructions)
I would have a local Certified Chimney Sweep www.csia.org, (there you can look up by zip code to find one near you) take a first hand look at what you have they should be able to help.
Hope this helps
James
