Question

Gap between Garage Att
Hi,
I my house i have a fireplace that backs up against the interier wall in my garage. (so the front is in my family room and back is in my garage.) the chimney goes up thru the garage in the garage attic and then outside. In the attick there is a gap between the interier wall and the cinder block of the chimney. The gap is anywhere from 1/2 inch to 3/4 of an inch. Can this be insulated / sealed with anything or does this gap have to be open?  Please see pic. You really cant see the gap well but this will give you the idea of what im trying to discribe. Thank you.

Answer
Hell Rob, there should be a 2" gap from the brick to combustibles from the smoke chamber all the way through the roof (current code), yes you can with fibre glass insulation only (no paper backing)
You can also check with your local building department
