Question
I was wondering why I could not use fire brick splits 9x 4.5x1.250 in size and set together with refractory mortar to replace the refractory panels seems like the firebrick would be more durable and i could always remortar the joints when they become worn do you see any problems with doing this I have talked with local chimney sweep companies about get replacement panels and have had no luck the manufacturer of the fireplace FMI wont deal with me directly they want to use a deal with someone who sell thier products and i dont have a local dealer in my area i live in north carolina greensboro area

Answer
Harrison, these units are tested with their panels (aftermarket are tested too) if you alter your unit in any way it might void your home owners insurance if you had a fire (I have seen this)
I would not try to do it with "FIRE BRICK"
I would have a local Certified Chimney Sweep www.csia.org, (there you can look up by zip code to find one near you) take a first hand look at what you have, they should be able to help.
Hope this helps
