Question
Can I use marble inside the firebox on the side walls, but not on the base?

Answer
Hello  Issak, I think it will crack, a firebox should be made out of 4" (laid on it's side) of firebrick, and 4" of regular brick, then 4" of air out the back of the fireplace and 2" of air on all sides every where else to the top.
most marble goes on the front face and surround of the fireplace.
good luck
