Chimney & Fireplaces/Smoke Smell in Upstairs Room

Question
When we use our fireplace in the first floor living room, the bedroom above the living room gets a strong smell of smoke, but NO smoke....just the smell.
The chimney runs along the outside of the house right by one of the windows from this bedroom.

We also have a problem when we have torrential rains, the fireplace gets wet and the brick in the living room gets wet in one particular spot.

Could these problems be related?

Suggestions on how to "attack" these issues?

Any thoughts?

Please use the links at the bottom of my home page at www.brooks-hearth.com to find an inspector to perform an NFPA-211 level II inspection of your system. Best not to guess what may be wrong and find out for certain. What you describe is a serious issue and must be addressed ASAP. Do not use your fireplace until this has been resolved. Best of luck.
