Chimney & Fireplaces/crumbling brick

Question
Dear Mr. Ball - The brick on the outside of my chimney is randomly crumbling and falling out of place in the form of thick brick dust. Don't really know how else to explain it. Can I repair this problem myself? I'm fairly handy - Help needed in Kansas City

Answer
Hello Ron, it sounds like the bricks are "spalling" in most cases the bricks soak up water and then the freeze will pop the face off. I would treat them with a water proofing to help keep the water out. if the bricks are that far gone then they have to be replaced.
I would have a local mason take a first hand look be sure he checks the crown (top dome of cement)
