Chimney & Fireplaces/leaking masonry fireplace

Question
This winter has been a wet one. We have a metal cap on the fireplace. Damper is closed. Gas logs instead of wood-burning.
When it rains heavily, the water leaks down the flue, like rain, causing white residue. Can the chimney be capped, if we continue with gas logs?

Answer
Hello Kimberly, do not "cap off the chimney", the gas logs must be vented,I would have a local Certified Chimney Sweep www.csia.org, (there you can look up by zip code to find one near you) take a first hand look at what you have they should be able to help see if your cap is working or offer a different one.
Hope this helps
James
