Answer
John,

NFPA-211 addresses this this type of installation as acceptable for a wood stove, but a direct connect to the top of the flue is far better. The pellet install you describe requires installation to be done according to the manufacture specs. check with them and you will find a full liner is most likely required. Not to mention as your new stove requires annual service, the install will require removal or flammable creosote will fall between the liner and chimney. Go with the liner all the way to the top and don't for get the required level II inspection before the install. Fell free to use the links at the bottom of my home page at www.brooks-hearth.com to find an inspector, a sweep, and in installer. you may find one that does it all. Best of luck.
