Chimney & Fireplaces/Chimney Liner

Question
I am having a high efficiency AC and Heater installed and vented outside. My understanding is that a chimney liner must be installed due to existing gas hot water heater. Contractor says no. I thought it was code (cherry hill, NJ). Also, I thought it is needed due to less hot air from heater "drafting" exhaust upward. Any guidance?

Answer
Hello Jeff, what you are talking about is called "Orphaning the hot water heater" and in most cases it must be lined and insulated to keep the gases hot to insure a good draft for this hot water heater and if you heating contractor didn't know this he should regardless of local codes (you can check with your local building department)
I would have a local Certified Chimney Sweep www.csia.org, (there you can look up by zip code to find one near you) take a first hand look at what you have they should be able to help.
Hope this helps
James
