QUESTION: Sorry, just to be clear,I am talking about soot on the walls of the room that the fireplace is in. How do I get that soot off and/or can I paint over it?

Answer
Welcome back Dennis, sorry didn't know, you might be able to wipe it off with Fantastic,409, scuff and re paint if necessary. But you should not be getting soot in the room , that unit is not vented properly and maybe very dangerous, have it serviced buy some one that porks on these type of units maybe a wood stove store.
