Question

Fireplace with Brick R
Bart, I purchased a 1970s-era home with a brick fireplace.  After removing the brick, I was surprised to find a fairly large gap between the fire box and the surrounding drywall as you can see in the image below.

It is my intention to tile the area surrounding the fireplace.  Is there a safe material that could be used to span that gap and provide a surface suitable for tiling?  Thank you so very much.

Hi Karen,

This "appears" to be a factory-built fireplace, but I can't tell for certain from the photo.

This fireplace should be inspected thoroughly before ANYTHING is done to make sure the clearances are correct.

I recommend you contact a local CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep to do some localized, on-site inspection of your installation.

I wish I could give you a quick answer, but without actually seeing this particular fireplace, any advice I give could be wrong.
