Question
I want to replace my existing fire box with a new one. The people selling me the new firebox are telling me that I will have to replace all the chimney piping not becuase of size but because of fit/fastner to the new fire box. Does this make sense? If this is true what is the best way top feed the new pipe in the existing structure, down through the top of the chimney?

Answer
Hello Jim, it sounds like you are replacing a Pre Fab fireplace if so then yes you have to use the pipe that is for that fire box (pre fab) you do not want to use 20-30 year old pipe with a new fireplace/box. All fireplace (pre fab's) systems are tested as a system with their glass doors, fire grate, chimney pipe, cap, supports, do not mix the old pipe with the new firebox. and if youy installer/sweep wanted to use the old pipe find another one.
