Chimney & Fireplaces/firebox floor repair

Question
I have 2 wood burning fireplaces, built in the early '50's., one in the basement and one direcly above it on the ground level. The floor firebrick in the ground level firebox is loose and the supporting mortar around the ash dump is deteriorating. Is this something I can repair myself ?

That may be possible. My question is what is making this happen? It could be water entry of something else. The only way to know for certain is to have an NFPA-211 level II inspection be performed and answer this and other question or concerns about the fireplace system.
