Question
I would like to cover my fireplace with slate. The fireplace is all brick (built in 1978), and goes from the floor to the vaulted ceiling. It has been painted with about 30 coats of paint and hideous. I plan on using cement backer board with masonry screws to cover the painted brick. Is the board safe? Can I put the board all the way up to the opening? I don't want my house to catch on fire. I use the fireplace every winter.

Answer
Hello Kerri, first I would have a Certified Sweep (CSIA.ORG) take a first hand look and then yes you can use "Cement" backer board and be sure that they leave no gaps for heat, spark or flame to get under and behind it when they are done, use nothing flammable.
also check with your local building department
hope this helps
