i live in a 1860s terraced house and the lining is crumbling inside the fireplace what sort of moarter should be used to reline it

Hello Sylvia, they make a high temp Fireplace mortar for repointing the brick in a fireplace, all old cement must be removed (then vac out the joints) and fill in by pushing the new mortar into he joints. follow instructions on set up time and you should be ok.
