Chimney & Fireplaces/replacing gas log set

Question
I have a "mock" fireplace that had original, single burner, low flame, low temp. gas log set. The fireplace has a very small vent of 3" pipe, vented only to the attic, not thru the roof. We have never lit this original set. We would like to have the more realistic look of the new log sets.  I would like to replace the original log set with a new set, maybe a ventless set up. I am concerned about the venting if we go to a new vented set of logs, as well as have heard negative comments on ventless systems.
Do we have proper venting for the new sets?
If not should we consider ventless?
Thanks

Answer
Hello Walter, I would say go to your local wood stove store and see what they have in vented and ventless, vented will need a chimney (not what you have, Do Not Use It) I am not a big fan of "vent free", they do make a 'direct vent" gas fired stoves (they look like a wood stove) and go right out through any out side wall (I have one), no fuss, no muss, flip a switch and it is on flip it again and its off (I use a fan to blow the hot air around my home)
in your case I would remove that old set up and go direct vent.
you can also have a local Certified Chimney Sweep www.csia.org, (there you can look up by zip code to find one near you) take a first hand look at what you have, they should be able to help.
Hope this helps
