Chimney & Fireplaces/smoke

Question
I have an older home with a double sided fireplac  with out any screens or closures on either side.  When we bought the house there were glass enclosures on both sides.  We plut rock on front of both sides of fireplace. It constantly smokes.  Do I need to get glass for both openings or jst one.  It is also in a very open area.  There a doors to the exterior in every room and the front door is also about 14 feet from fireplace.  So when people come in and out the wind blows and smokes up the whole house.   At this point my husband wnt to put in gas and glass so we will never have a wood burning fireplace.  Or even the fake logs.  Any suggestions?
Thanks Trish

Answer
Hello Trish, you might have a sizing problem of the fireplace to flue size or a negative pressure issues here is a link to that http://www.csia.org/HomeownerResources/ChimneySafetyInfo/HowYourChimneyWorks/tab, there you can also find a Certified sweep who might be able to help.
