Question

Hello can you help, I need some advice on the fireplace in the house i have recently purchased.  It seems as though it has a new unused recess insert.  I have also had the chimney swept and it is clear.

The question is why is the base/hearth so high from the floor.  This will present a problem to me - because i wish to buy and install a new full surround (Mantelshelf/Frieze/Jamb and new hearth).

Have you ever seen a hearth this high off the floor?

please see picture (ignore electric heater in front).

Best Regards

Allan

Answer
Hello Allan, 1st yes I have seen them that high. 2nd do not use that "insert" as it looks like a set of gas logs and it may not be safe to use. 3rd contact your local building department for the "Clearance to combustibles" you need for what you want to install. 4th I would have a local Certified Chimney Sweep www.csia.org, (there you can look up by zip code to find one near you) take a first hand look at what you have, they should be able to help.
Hope this helps
