Chimney & Fireplaces/Closing a chimney

Question
I have a one storey residence with a open inglenook fireplace. I want to shut off the chimney externally with a solid slab on the top; how can I best close off the base in the lounge (above where the fire would be)and do I need any venting?  Do I need to fill the chimney space with anything? I will be installing a gas warmer in place of where the open fire used to be.  Any help would be useful. Thank you!

Answer
Hello Peter, if your "Gas warmer" is vent free then you can stuff insulation up inside the damper area, and close the top off with a sheet of  galvanized metal and silicone. if your using is not vent free then the chimney must be operational, check the Gas unit's install instructions and your local building department.
