Chimney & Fireplaces/Kiva fireplace smoke stain

Question
I inadvertently let smoke out of the kiva fireplace at a relatives
s house and they are upset b/c there's a black stain now, around the entrance to the fireplace. I am new to the state and have never dealt with this kind of fireplace and the type of plaster they're made with. My relatives think that getting the plaster wet could ruin it. I tried googling getting soot off plaster and didn't find anything specific to this situation. Can you tell me how to clean it without damaging the plaster?

Thank you so much! Please respond as soon as you can!

Answer
