Chimney & Fireplaces/outdoor fireplace smokes out the front

Question
I had a contractor come and build an outdoor fireplace. He specializes in pavers/versa block. The front opening of the fireplace is massive-about 3.5ft. (Ill have to measure to get exact figure) and the flue he put in is very small.) Smoke pours out the front of the fireplace terrible. You cant enjoy it because the smoke smacks you in the face while setting there. I can email you pictures of everything and get you the correct measurements-but I need help! Shouldn't the flue be bigger? Note that this was his first fireplace that he has ever built too.

Answer
Hello Dawn, check with your local building department for size of flue for fireplace opening required in your area (If you get me the height and with of the opening and the height of the chimney I might be able to get that info for you).
Some suggestions for you, re build the chimney or make it much taller b ut check with your local building department
pictures might help.
