Chimney & Fireplaces/New fireplace or used.

Question
I want a fireplace installed in my home. I dont have one at this time. I have seen several used inserts for sale that are inexpensive. Would it be wise to buy a used one and have it installed, or go with a company that sells them and installs them. In your opinion, which way would be more cost effective.

Answer
Hi Severo,

Prior to the installation of any insert into an existing fireplace, a Level 2 Inspection needs to be completed to determine the actual condition of your existing system and the suitability of that system for the potential installation you are considering.

I recommend you contact a local CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep to perform this inspection and to advise you on your options for inserts and the insulated stainless steel chimney lining system that should be installed with the unit.  You can find a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep at www.csia.org.

Any new installation of an insert, new or used, must meet current building codes and the requirements of the local code officials.  Any new installation of an insert should ONLY be with a unit that meets EPA requirements for particulates and emissions.  Local requirements may dictate what requirements must be met as well.

Thanks for using AllExperts.Com and good luck with your project.
