Chimney & Fireplaces/cleaning? gas fireplace

The flame in my gas fireplace is very large and high in the middle and low in the front.  Attempts to adjust the gas result in a high flame which I am concerned will damage the flue.  I am thinking that this may be a result of dirty jets, and/or too many fake cinders.
I have read online that to clean the fireplace I need to turn off the gas outside first.
My question is whether you think this is the problem and will removing all the cinders and logs and cleaning the jets help out and if you have any tips for me while I do this job.  Our house is about 12 years old and we have only been living here for 2.
Thank you in advance for your time and assistance!

Hi Lisa,

I recommend you contact a local NFI Certified Gas Specialist to do some on-site diagnosis of your problem.  I would recommend that you discontinue the use of the fireplace until a trained, qualified service technician can look at the unit.  It sounds like something is wrong with it.

You can find a NFI Certified Gas Specialist at
