Chimney & Fireplaces/Gas starter flute for wood burning fireplace

Question
We have a wood burning fireplace that has been plumbed with a propane gas pipe. It was capped when we moved in 7 years ago but I uncapped it and placed a six inch fluted pipe. I've used it without problems to turn on the gas, light the wood and turn off the gas. I had friends over this weekend and they said I was crazy and should re cap the pipe and use starter logs. One thing that concerns me is where the pipe comes out of the wall, there is a fair amount of space and it is not sealed .
1. Is what I'm doing safe?
2. Is it legal?
3. Is the space around the pipe where it enters the fireplace normal?

Thanks,

Robert

Answer
Hello Robert,

Typically, LP gas supply pipes for log lighters are not allowed without special provisions AND without the approval of the Local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).

The gas supply pipe penetration should be sealed before ANY further use of the appliance.

I recommend you contact your local Building Code Enforcement Authority (AHJ) to determine the legality of your LP gas supply pipe as a gas log lighter.

Additionally, I recommend you contact a local CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep to do some on-site evaluation of this situation.

You can find a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep at www.csia.org.

Alternatively, I recommend you contact a local NFI Certified Gas Specialist to do some on-site evaluation of this situation.

You can find a NFI Certified Gas Specialist at www.nficertified.org.
