Chimney & Fireplaces/steel insert removal from masonry fireplace

Question
I have an old fireplace on an adobe house. The steel insert is similar to the old heatilators. Can this insert be removed and part of the smoke chamber so a pellet stove can be installed without damaging the chimney?

Answer
Hello Dave, not sure what you have there or how much can be "removed" safely, I have never worked on an Adobe type house or type chimney, I would have a local Certified Chimney Sweep www.csia.org, (there you can look up by zip code to find one near you) take a first hand look at what you have, they should be able to help, also check with your local building department.
Hope this helps
