Chimney & Fireplaces/Flue Damper problem on Heatilator

Hi Randy,

I have a Heatilator EC36 wood burning insert which was installed
in 2000.  Recently I've been having a problem with the flue damper when I attempt to close it.  For some reason it just falls back to the center position everytime I try and close it.  Conversely its not a problem when I have it in the open position and it stays snuggly in this position.  Does this sound like I need to get a new damper or is this potentially a fixable item that I can replace ? My recent chimney sweep said he couldnt help me with it and that I would need to have a Heatilator service guy check it out.  I'd like to save the cost of a service call if its a DIY fix and/or repair.

This does sound simple. Give the damper handle a good look as you open and close it. Sometimes there is a retention piece you may not be engaging or simply not moving it far enough. If you can't find it, call a CSIA certified sweep to inspect your system. It does sound simple though.
Good luck!
