Question
our heatilator is rusted out. can a insert been installed into the metal box or does it need to be removed. We intend to install flex pipe in chimney to connect new insert

Answer
Hello Linda, the Insert manufacture will state if it can or can't install in an old insertion that type of fireplace also the SS liner must be insulated, and pull a building permit, I would have a local Certified Chimney Sweep www.csia.org, (there you can look up by zip code to find one near you) take a first hand look at what you have, they should be able to help.
Hope this helps
