Question
Our home is an all brick bungalow home with a brick chimney, which is not functional (it's only there for show). The chimney is breaking apart from the top downwards.  Pieces approx 1" to 3" break away typically after a winter period, so I'm thinking a moisture problem.  We inquired with a local masonry worker who's informed us that the brick used for the chimney was incorrect. When we asked what we could do to repair it we were advised to take it down and rebuild for an absurd cost.  Even then the brick may not match because the house is 23 yrs old.  We want to keep the chimney, but can't seem to find a solution to stop the breakage. We were thinking of maybe covering it with stucco..any ideas around this problem?

Hi Norm,

Take the chimney down and rebuild it.  It's expensive to lay bricks at height.

If you put stucco on it, it won't match either, so I would tear it down and lay it back up with bricks to match or compliment the house.
