Question
When new siding was applied to my 15 year house two years ago, the contractor did an improper job and is now out of business. Siding was applied outside of the chase cover and the siding goes one inch above the chase cover. This creates a lip and water does not drip off. Hence, the cover is now rusting with some water is getting into the house.
I've had various estimates ranging from $750 to $1,700 with different services being provided. I'm not sure if the cheaper contractor is cutting corners or if the higher priced contractor is adding unneeded services. For $750, a new galvanized chase cover/collar is installed. For $1,700, the siding/lip is cut away, the old cover is removed, and a new chase cover and collar is installed.
So my question is can the old chase cover remain in place; and given the lip created by the siding, can it be installed without cutting back the lip?
Hi Jim,
The old chase cover should be removed, bracing should be installed to support the new chase cover and insure positive drainage.
The old siding lip should be cut away and the new chase cover should cover the top of the siding.
I recommend you contact a local CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep to do the repair work you've described.
