Hi Bart,
We want to repair a red clay brick chimney. The structure is sound but some of the bricks have crumbled (lost an inch or two of the brick) on the exterior and wonder what can be done to improve the appearance? What are the options? Attaching a new thin brick to the old brick with mortar or trying to tint mortar to match the brick and return it to its original shape, flush with the rest of the chimney? Hope my question isn't too goofy!

Hi Melissa,

You can attach a thin veneer brick to the entire face of the structure or you can cut out the defective bricks and replace them.

Don't try to tint mortar to match the brick.  It looks bad and isn't the correct repair.

The big issue that needs addressed is the water intrusion that has caused the spalling in the first place.  After the source of that's been determined and a solution has been enacted, you can proceed with the brick repair/replacement.

I recommend you contact a local CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep to do some on-site diagnosis of your problem.
