Chimney & Fireplaces/Creasote / wood stain on comp. roof

Question
I recently had installed a new insert in my fireplace. Now I have a creosote stain in front of the chimney which I never had before. I have tried simple green, and soap and water. Do you know if a product I can use that will lift the stain off of my comp. roof?
Secondly, I never had this problem before I had the new inset installed. The other one had no pipe running through the chimney, now this one does and now I am having the staining problems. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Kevin

Answer
Hi Kevin,

I recommend you contact a local CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep to do some on-site diagnosis of your problem.

You can find a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep at www.csia.org.

They carry a product called Home and Hearth Cleaner which might take the stain off.

As for preventing the problem, have the chimney cap changed out to an inverted top design, which allows the condensation to drip back into the flue.

Thanks for using AllExperts.Com and good luck with your project.
