Question
I have a masonry double sided fireplace with smoke going to the kitchen side. Kitchen side is 875, Living room side is 858. I'm not sure how to measure the flue, but, with it open it measures 7" wide and 34" long. It is in the front of the chimney towards the living room. I would like to put just a solid piece of glass in the kitchen as I don't need access from there and we could still see the fire and get the warmth in the kitchen. Would this help or hinder? Who could do this type of work?

Hi Pamela,

I recommend you contact a local CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep to do some on-site diagnosis of your problem and offer some specific solutions.

You shouldn't put glass on one side as it can break quite easily due to the heat force exerted on it.  A set of glass doors might work, though, if they had ceramic glass installed in them.
