Chimney & Fireplaces/Fireplace choices

Question
Hi Bart, We are building a home at the moment and we are pretty sure that we want a real wood burning fireplace. It is going to be the focal point of our great room located in the center of a window wall and rising up 2 stories.  Because of this large room and since we are on the water and it gets cold, my main question is what would you suggest is the best way to get the maximum heat out of the fire?  I have heard that 80% of the heat goes up the chimney.  I seen different grates that claim it captures more of the heat and sends it into the room, and also  Heatolator type inserts with blowers etc.  Since I'm starting from scratch what do you feel is the best way to go.  Thanks for your opinion and any guidance you can send my way.

Answer
Hi Dale,

Your best bet to heat with is the BIS Tradition High Efficiency woodburning fireplace.

A conventional masonry fireplace will pull more air out of the house than it will ever put heat back in.

Thanks for using AllExperts.Com and good luck with your project.

Sincerely,
