Chimney & Fireplaces/Fireplace odor with air conditioning on...

Question
Hi, we have an issue that no one has been able to help us
with....maybe you will be the first!  On warm summer days,
especially in the afternoon (our chimney is on the West side of
our home), we get a very strong fireplace/chimney odor in our
living room.  It appears that the air conditioning return vent is
pulling air through the fireplace and pulling the odor down.  We
have a top cap on the chimney and it has been verified 2x to
make sure that it is properly sealed.  It's uncomfortable to sit in
our living room because of the strong smell.  It's only my guess
that it's related to the air conditioning return vent, but, I'm
pretty sure that it's the case.  We have glass doors on the
fireplace, but, they don't seal 100%.  Anything we can do to
prevent this from occurring?  Much appreciated in advance.
Brian

Answer
Hi Brian,

Your house A/C system is unbalanced and is using the fireplace flue as make-up air.

Contact a HVAC company that specializes in balancing house pressure problems and they should be able to solve your problem.

Thanks for using AllExperts.Com and good luck with your project.
