Chimney & Fireplaces/Gas Chimney

Question
I'm a new homeowner and have never had a chimney, Help!! I have 2 fireplaces one in my livingroom and one in my bedroom.  I'm pretty sure it's a gas fireplace because we have some fake losgs that have a cut out in the fireplace.  My question is about some grey lint looking stuff that's in my fireplace.  My husband took a piece of the lint looking matter and tried to burn it outside, but it did not burn.(lint usually burns right)  He's thinking it may be some type of wick or something that may obsorb in case there is a leak in the pipe.  It's only on one side which is the weird thing it's by the gas line on the left.  If it was lint or dust shouldn't it be everywhere.  Help, I don't want to turn on the gas line and blow up.  Also we've put a fire log in and burned that I hope we didn't do anything wrong.  Thanks any info would help

Answer
Lisa,

DON'T burn any more firelogs in this fireplace!  It sounds like you have a gas logset.

The "lint" you described is called rock wool and is there to simulate burning embers.

I recommend you call a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep and have them look at your particular situation.  You can find a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep at www.csia.org.

Again, DON'T burn any more firelogs in this fireplace!

Sincerely,
