What is an "upside down fire"?

I saw your answer re such grates not causing damage to proper materials, but my question is whether the grates work as claimed (smoke-free, more heat, and more efficient).  Do you have any experience with the grates or know anyone who has?

Hi Edward,

I can't say whether or not they work or not.

I CAN tell you that ANY grate will introduce air to the fuel bed and increase temperatures in the firebox and possibly create less creosote in the flue.

If you have a masonry fireplace, an upside-down fire is better than any grate on the market.

Don't forget to contact a local CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep to do your chimney sweeping!

Hi Edward,

An upside-down fire is built by stacking larger pieces of wood at the bottom, gradually reducing to small kindling on the top.  Light the TOP first and get it going and almost NO smoke will be seen as the fire catches and burns down into the stack.

Try it - you'll be amazed!

No grate or log lighter bar is needed for masonry fireplaces with an upside down fire.
