Question
Have a 30 year old heat-a-lator that has some vertical  cracking along back of the burn box. Possibly burn through. We get a small amount of smoke coming into room with or without blower fans on. What repair can be done? Have heard there is a plate that can be mounted to the Heat-a-lator? Where can they be found?

Hi Marlin,

The existing firebox will need to be removed and replaced.  If it's damaged that badly, it's beyond repair in my opinion.  30 years of service is exceptional, but it's time to replace.  

With the smoke you're seeing, you're not seeing or smelling the carbon monoxide that is also being forced into the living area.  

Don't use the fireplace until it's replaced.

I recommend you contact a local CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep to do some on-site diagnosis of your problem and to provide some recommendations on replacement.
