Chimney & Fireplaces/New insert with smoke in house

Question
Dear Bart,

Recently re-placed my old fire place insert with a new one and now smoke goes in to my basement since replacing it.

The chimney has 3 separate flues 1 for the above ground fire place, and 2 separate flues for the below ground fire place with insert in my basement.

My old insert needed to be replaced and smoke did go out both separate flues and never leaked smoke into the basement.

Since putting the new Buck stove insert in, it leaks smoke everytime I start a fire.

All 3 flues have been cleaned and inspected recently.

Do you have any recommendations?  I have been told to close off the 2nd flue in the basement which does not make sense to me since it worked that way previously.

Thanks Mike

Answer
Hi Mike,

Sounds like your house is using the basement flue as make-up air for the main floor insert.

If the new insert was not lined fully to the top of the chimney with an insulated stainless steel chimney liner, the smoke could be crossing over from one flue to the other within the chimney.

I recommend you contact a local CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep to do some on-site diagnosis of your problem and to do a video scan of the interior of the flues.

You can find a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep at www.csia.org.

Thanks for using AllExperts.Com and good luck with your project.

Sincerely,
