Question
Hi,

I recently bought a house with a built-in brick fireplace in the basement. The home inspector told me that the fireplace was non-functional and shouldn't be used. The best way to describe the actual fireplace is that it looks like a traditional wood-fired pizza oven made all out of bricks. The inspector told me not to use it as there was not enough clearance (18" I believe) in front of the fireplace.

Apart from laying non-combustible flooring around the front of the fireplace, what other reasons could there be for it being non-functional? What are my options if I want to stay with a wood fireplace?

I would really like a slow combustion fireplace with glass doors like an insert. Would this mean having to install a chimney liner?
