Chimney & Fireplaces/Outdoor fire pits

Question
Bart,

I guess there would only be "outdoor" fire pits, but here's my question. I am building one right now. I got a 12' kit from a major home improvement store and it's looking good. The actual pit is 42" diameter and I thought that I would just be tossing logs into that, but my wife insists that there should be something like a grate used. Do you think that's necessary or helpful for a fire pit?
I'm scheduled to drink my first beers with my new pit next weekend. Thanks for your advice.

Answer
Hi Larry,

You don't need a grate with a firepit unless you're cooking something over it like steaks, burgers, brats...

Don't forget that the pit needs to be completely smothered out before leaving it for the night.  I'll leave that you your devices on how that should be done.

Thanks for using AllExperts.Com and good luck with your project.

Sincerely,
